As cliché as it sounds, photography has been a part of my life since I was a kid. My dad gave me my first film camera for Christmas when I was just four years old, and I became obsessed with documenting everything.
As I grew older, photography took a backseat while I focused on college and life. But everything changed the week after my husband, Brachen, and I got married. My dad was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer and given two weeks to live. Losing him was devastating, and life felt like a blur. Then, my incredible husband handed me Christmas presents one by one—an SD card, a battery, a lens cap—all leading up to my first-ever DSLR camera.
That was the moment everything changed.
Photography became my outlet. I found joy in capturing love stories, in freezing those once-in-a-lifetime moments. And soon, it became my career. What started as a passion project grew into Bella Alder Photo + Film, a full-time business that my husband and I now run together. How cool is that?

Brachen was my ASL teacher at Utah State.
Yep. I’ll give you a second to pick your jaw up off the floor. But before you start thinking it was scandalous, let me explain.
I walked into his class on the first day of the semester, hair curled, Led Zeppelin shirt on, feeling confident. I immediately thought, Oh, he’s cute. Then he started signing, and I understood approximately zero words for the next hour.
My little sister has Autism, so I grew up signing with her, but let’s just say I was a lot better in my head than in reality. His class was hard. He never spoke, and the entire thing was taught in sign language. Honestly, we didn’t even like each other back then—I thought he was too strict, and he thought I was too chill.
We didn’t start talking until after the semester ended (and I had officially failed his class). But once we started, we never stopped. A friendship turned into a relationship, then into a lifelong adventure.
Now, we have two beautiful kids—Mila and Cyrus—and one rowdy dog named Eb-Dog. Our life is wild, messy, and wonderful, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
